Introduction

Hugo Graphite is a robust and versatile Hugo theme, originally forked from the popular Hugo Lithium theme. It has undergone significant modifications and enhancements by a collaborative team including Jonathan Rutheiser, Yihui Xie, Hadley Wickham, Mara Averick, Robby Shaver, the tidyverse team, Desirée De Leon, and Alison Hill. This theme is specifically engineered to cater to the needs of RStudio teams, exemplified by its successful implementation on tidyverse.org.

The name "Graphite" is a thoughtful metaphor, drawing parallels to the mineral's carbon atoms arranged in hexes and the familiar, easily modifiable nature of pencils. This reflects the theme's core philosophy of being user-friendly, adaptable, and easy to customize.

Key Features:

  • Articles: The theme provides comprehensive support for articles and blog posts, featuring thumbnail images on listing pages and prominent banner images on individual article pages. Authorship can be attributed to specific team members or generic text for guest contributors.
  • Authors: A dedicated section allows for the creation and management of team member profiles. This includes a team listing page and individual biographical pages that dynamically link to all articles contributed by each author.
  • Events: Robust event management capabilities are integrated, offering sticky reminders for upcoming events, a dynamic event calendar, and an organized archive of past events, categorized by year. Events can also be linked to attending team members.

Theme Update 2020.07.01 Highlights:

Recent updates have introduced a suite of new and improved features, significantly enhancing the theme's functionality and user experience:

  • Enhanced Navigation & Content Structure: Implements a sticky Table of Contents for blog posts, new taxonomy terms templates for both tags and categories, and anchorized header links for improved in-page navigation.
  • Interactivity & Usability: Adds convenient copy-to-clipboard functionality for code chunks and introduces new shortcodes to easily create distinct note and warning boxes within content.
  • Flexible Layouts: Expands content presentation options with two new layout types: tutorial and learn, making it suitable for educational and instructional content.
  • Accessibility & Aesthetics: Prioritizes user experience with better image accessibility, larger base font sizes for improved readability, and a wider array of parameters for customizing the site's visual aesthetics.

Small Tweaks & Technical Improvements:

Further refinements include automatically adding target=_blank to all external links, ensuring symmetric hexes on package pages, and improving the highlighting of active menu items in the upper navigation bar, even with complex Hugo nested sections. The theme also benefits from a JQuery upgrade, improved RSS feed handling, enhanced sharing images for Open Graph and Twitter, styled footnotes via Goldmark Renderer, and the inclusion of Chroma CSS styles for syntax highlighting, particularly beneficial for Hugodown sites. These updates culminate in a shiny new demo site and a more pronounceable theme name.

It is important to note that Hugo Graphite is currently a work in progress, undergoing frequent changes and rapid iteration to explore variations and meet evolving needs. Users are generally advised to monitor its development and consider adoption once it reaches a more mature and stable state.
